Brittle nails: what helps and what is just marketing
Peeling, nails that snap, white spots. Real causes and what to do, without miracle supplements.
A nail is compacted keratin and, like hair, it is not “fed” from the outside. What you can do is protect it and stop breaking it.
The most common causes
Water and detergents. Repeated soaking swells and shrinks the nail plate, which then peels from mechanical stress. Gloves in the kitchen do more than any strengthening serum.
Wrong gel polish removal. Peeling it off takes layers of nail plate with it. It is the single most frequent damage we see.
Acetone removers used often. They dehydrate deeply. Not forbidden, but not for weekly use.
What genuinely helps
A cuticle oil used every evening, consistently. A strengthening base coat during recovery. And keeping the nail short until the damaged part has grown out: there is no way to repair dead keratin, you can only wait for it to be replaced.
Those white spots
Almost never a calcium deficiency, whatever the folklore says. In the vast majority of cases they are micro-traumas to the matrix that happened weeks earlier.
